The 2010 Perioperative Summit has completed. Thank you to all those who attended. Looking forward to seeing you again in 2011!

Summary

Dr. Amir K. Jaffer and Dr. Franklin Michota, the founding Summit Directors, in collaboration with Dr. David Hepner, will direct the 5th Annual Perioperative Medicine Summit in Miami, Florida.

The course is co-sponsored by the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic in collaboration with the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI).

The goal of the Summit is to enable clinicians who are actively engaged in perioperative medical care to incorporate the latest findings from clinical research into their practices so that they can improve the quality and safety of their medical care.

Evidence-based lectures will be supplemented by clinical cases and an Audience Response System will be used for exchange of information among faculty and attendees. A dedicated 15 minute Q&A session after each presentation has been a highlight of this Summit. In addition, clinical and lab research, innovations and clinical vignettes related to perioperative medicine will be selected for presentation.

The IMPACT Center

Internal Medicine Preoperative Assessment Consultation and Treatment (IMPACT) Center at the Cleveland Clinic is a state-of-the art preoperative center in its 9th year of operation. Over 16,500 patients were seen in 2009. Patients are referred from surgeons in over 10 different surgical departments at the Cleveland Clinic, ranging from Colorectal surgery to Vascular Surgery.

IMPACT Achieves Better Outcomes

In an era where outcomes are important, the IMPACT Center staff evaluate patients undergoing non-cardiac surgery and outline the perioperative risks, optimize the chronic conditions and make evidence-based recommendations for patients, the anesthesiologists and the surgical team. This systematic approach results in safe and quality care for patients at the Cleveland Clinic. A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Outcomes showed that the IMPACT Center evaluation resulted in a low rate of postoperative pulmonary complications compared to nationally reported numbers.

Annual Perioperative Medicine Summit: Improving Quality, Safety and Outcomes.

We hold formal visitation programs for faculty from other institutions and an annual CME event in its second year called: The Perioperative Medicine Summit: Improving Quality, Safety and Outcomes.
